It is a tall, perennial, grassy plant or shrub. It usually produces (in the summer months) small beads with a hard shell, which look like a pearl or have the shape of a tear, in white pearl color. It is used for making rosaries, necklaces, prayer books, as well as in other decorative uses. It is also used in nutrition and folk medicine. Cold resistant, it prefers sunny planting locations, but it doesn’t have special soil requirements.
